The Importance of Prayer
- Sermon By: Pastor B. T Lasisi
Main Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Introduction
What role does prayer play in your daily life?
Transition: Prayer is not just a religious activity—it’s the lifeline of our relationship with God.
Point 1: Prayer Builds Our Relationship with God
Scripture: James 4:8 “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
Explanation: Prayer is like a conversation with a close friend; it deepens our intimacy with God.
Illustration: Imagine having a friend you never talk to—over time, the relationship weakens. Prayer keeps our connection with God strong.
Application: Set aside intentional time each day to talk to God.
Point 2: Prayer Provides Strength and Guidance
Scripture: Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Explanation: When we face challenges, prayer gives us the strength to endure and clarity to make decisions.
Illustration: Share the example of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-39). Even Jesus prayed for strength in a difficult moment.
Application: Encourage the congregation to turn to prayer, not panic, when faced with trials.
Point 3: Prayer Changes Circumstances
Scripture: Mark 11:24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Explanation: God hears and answers prayers according to His will. Our prayers can move mountains and transform situations.
Illustration: Share the story of Elijah praying for rain after a drought (1 Kings 18:41-45). His persistence in prayer led to God’s provision.
Application: Encourage persistent, faith-filled prayers. Remind the congregation that God’s timing and ways are perfect.
Point 4: Prayer Aligns Us with God’s Will
Scripture: Matthew 6:10 “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Explanation: Prayer doesn’t just change our circumstances—it changes us. It aligns our desires with God’s purposes.
Illustration: When Paul prayed about his thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-9), God’s response reminded him of His grace and sufficiency.
Application: Encourage the congregation to pray with a heart of surrender, trusting that God’s will is always best.
Call to Action: How to Cultivate a Life of Prayer
Be Consistent: Set aside time daily, like Daniel who prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:10).
Be Honest: Share your heart with God—He knows it anyway.
Be Persistent: Like the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8), keep praying even when answers seem delayed.
Pray with Faith: Believe in God’s power and promises.
Conclusion
Reiterate the key points: Prayer builds our relationship with God, gives us strength, changes circumstances, and aligns us with God’s will.
Close with this encouragement: “A prayerless life is a powerless life. But when you pray, you invite the power and presence of God into every area of your life.”
Lead the congregation in a short, heartfelt prayer: “Lord, teach us to pray. Help us to rely on You daily, trust You completely, and seek Your will in all we do.”
Closing Scripture for Reflection
Jeremiah 29:12 “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”
